Girls to the Front slides + summary
On Tuesday, you created these wonderful DIY slides [pdf] for your assigned section of Girls to the Front: The True Story of the Riot Grrrl Revolution by Sara Marcus. I asked you to be ready to summarize your assigned section but to use your slide to amplify the most significant moment from those pages.
We did not have time to share and summarize, so let’s begin today by doing that. Each member of your group will speak while the slide is up.
Group 1: pp 216-219 Group 2: pp 220-223 Group 3: pp 224-228

Share zines
Let’s circle up and share some of the zines we ordered a few weeks ago. As you share, tell us:
- Where you ordered your zines from: why this place and these zines?
- How the zines were packaged: did they came with supplemental material as Freedman notes in her chapter?
- Your zines’ contents: what’s the zine about? Was it any good?
- Your zines’ production: are there any trick you might consider stealing as you begin to make your own zine?
Zines: “Self-Publication with Riot Grrrl Ideals” by Jenna Freedman
- Given what we just shared from Marcus’s chapter, and considering Freedman’s title for the piece your read for today, what are punk or “riot grrrl ideals” and how or why are zines just the medium to express those ideals?
- What do zines typically do/not do according to Freedman? What are some common features or characteristics? To what extent do the zines you ordered match these features?
Tactile proof: group time
If we have time, let’s give you groups a moment to reconnect and focus on who you think you’ll choose for this project and the artifact you’ll want to share with us.
Homework for next class
- Complete Find & Copy exercise; bring print or digital images to class on Tuesday.
- Keep reading/researching for Tactile Proof: be ready to tell me your chosen publisher on Tuesday, including potential artifacts and where you’ll find them to share with us.
